Three Five-Minute Walks Daily Can Protect Your Health

Sitting for long periods of time can cause people to develop a number of serious medical conditions. With so many people today earning their living sitting in front of a computer, that means millions of people are in danger. A study done by researchers at Indiana University have found a solution to this pervasive problem. They concluded that if people take 5 minute walks several times during the work day, they can reverse the damage done to the arteries in the legs caused by prolonged sitting.

A Washington Post article quotes the study’s authors as saying if people take a 5 minute walk once an hour during their work day, they can counteract all that sitting. (washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2014/09/08/take-a-seat-you-may-be-able-to-reverse-the-damage-to-your-health/). Sitting for long periods is very dangerous. Not only does it negatively affect arteries in the legs, it can lead to (high blood sugar, obesity, cardiovascular problems, and metabolic syndrome.

Researchers say too much sitting causes the blood to pool, affects the arteries’ endothelial function, impedes blood flow to the heart, and can lead to Behcet’s disease, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, and septic shock. With many American workers sitting almost 8 hours a day, that can mean millions of people of all ages are at risk for these conditions. Fortunately the solution to the problem is fast, simple, and won’t cost you a dime. Get up and walk around for a few minutes several times a day. I like how the asset management firm BRL Trust puts it- because you are your most important asset.
