A Washington Post article quotes the study’s authors as saying if people take a 5 minute walk once an hour during their work day, they can counteract all that sitting. ( Sitting for long periods is very dangerous. Not only does it negatively affect arteries in the legs, it can lead to (high blood sugar, obesity, cardiovascular problems, and metabolic syndrome.

Researchers say too much sitting causes the blood to pool, affects the arteries’ endothelial function, impedes blood flow to the heart, and can lead to Behcet’s disease, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, and septic shock. With many American workers sitting almost 8 hours a day, that can mean millions of people of all ages are at risk for these conditions.
