Warner Bros. isn’t taking Deadpool’s snark lying down, with the Teen Titans Go! To the Movies creators giving some clap-back to the Merc With the Mouth’s mockery.
Deadpool 2 stars a fourth-wall-breaking, somewhat insane anti-hero with a penchant for meta humor, and this has been reflected in the promotional material; often, his jokes are made the competition’s expense. In the most recent trailer, for example, he responds to Cable (Josh Brolin) stabbing him with “So dark, are you sure you’re not from the DC universe?”, which references many fans’ complaints about the DC Extended Universe being overly dour.
Of course, Deadpool is played by Ryan Reynolds, who has some history in DC Comics movies. The first Deadpool itself poked fun at that (“Please don’t make the suit green. Or animated!“) and now the official Teen Titans Go! To the Movie Twitter account is getting in on the fun.
“Hey @VancityReynolds, caught your new @deadpoolmovie trailer. Never forget – before you became a @Marvel character, you were a part of the @DCComics universe,” they wrote, along with a gif of John Stewart (voiced by rapper Lil Yachty) from their upcoming movie. He says, “There was a Green Lantern movie… but we don’t talk about that,” in reference to that movie’s poor reception.
While obviously more kid-friendly, the Teen Titans Go! movie (based on the popular Cartoon Network TV show) is likewise a parody of superhero films, which has also been reflected in their marketing. Perhaps a friendly rivalry between the two could help promote both of them and their nonsensical humor.
Deadpool 2 will be out on May 18, while Teen Titans Go! To the Movie will be released on July 17.
