The beginning of May means the beginning of the summer movie season, when Hollywood unleashes its blockbusters and franchise movies. Some of the movies coming out include the following:
May 5 – “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2”
The sequel to the 2014 hit continues the adventures and misadventures of the titular misfit heroes. It also introduces some new allies and enemies, most notably Kurt Russell as Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt) father.
June 2 – “Wonder Woman”
Gal Gadot stars as Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman, who finally gets her own movie! The movie jumps back about a century before the rest of the DCU films and depicts Diana’s upbringing on Themyscira and her later encounter with Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), a WWI pilot.
June 23 – “The Beguiled”
Based on a novel called “A Painted Devil,” “The Beguiled” is set at a girls’ boarding school in Virginia during the Civil War. Sofia Coppolla directs the film in which the headmistress (Nicole Kidman) takes in a wounded Union soldier (Colin Farrell).
July 7 – “Spider-Man: Homecoming”
While there have been five Spider-Man movies made this century, this will be the first one to tie the web-slinger into the MCU. In it, Spider-Man becomes the protégé of Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) and battles the Vulture (Michael Keaton).
July 14 – “War for the Planet of the Apes”
The third installment in the “Planet of the Apes” series does indeed depict apes and humans at war with each other. Caesar (Andy Serkis) leads the apes into battle against The Colonel (Woody Harrelson).
July 21 – “Dunkirk”
Directed by Christopher Nolan, “Dunkirk” tells of the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the harbor and beaches of Dunkirk France during World War II.
