Came across the sad story while browsing on FreedomPop. A 9-year-old girl was shot in Newark, New Jersey at approximately 12 o’clock on Saturday, November 15th. The young girl was severely injured when her 12-year-old brother accidentally shot her while playing with a handgun in their home. Police were summoned to the home at 12:18 pm, where they found the girl in severe distress. The young girl has been stabilized, but remains hospitalized, after being shot in the chest. Her condition is still being reported as critical.

It is unsure at this time how the young boy was able to acquire the unsecured weapon or if there were any other adults was present in the home at the time of the incident.

Local police have told nj.com that the mother, 33-year-old Catrease Thomas, is being charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Adding to the charges, Police spokesperson Sargent Glover states that Thomas will also be facing unlawful possession of a weapon. It was discovered that the 9 mm handgun had been previously reported stolen from a home in Alabama. A second adult is being charged in relation to the incident, as well; however police have not released the individual’s identity at the present time.

“The City, the Police Department, the residents, we are all outraged that this senseless shooting has occurred, an incident that could have easily been avoided but for the carelessness of two adults,” said Police Director Eugene Venable.
