Recently, Scott Rocklage issued a press release offering insight to the step he and his team have made against fighting genetic disorders. This team is led by Expansion Therapeutics, a pharmaceutical research company where Dr. Scott is one of its founders and sits on its board of directors. Expansion Therapeutics also has partners helping in its research including Novartis Venture Fund, Sanofi Ventures, and Kleiner Perkins. 5 AM Ventures, which is led by Dr. Scott, is also a major partner in this research. Both RA Capital Management and Alexandria Venture Investments have also taken part in this partnership from time to time.
The 5AM Ventures managing partner, Expansion Therapeutics and their partners all have their muzzles pointed to one genetic disorder – myotonic dystrophy. This disorder also known as DM1 contributes to the largest number of muscular dystrophy among adults. Muscular dystrophy affects the heart, hormonal system, gastrointestinal system, respiratory system and most of the other body muscles. This disorder makes all this organs and muscle systems to be defective. The disorder is hereditary, and in worst case scenarios, whole families can be affected. The disorder gets more severe generation after generation.
A united front
Of late, there has been a lot of efforts to eradicate this disorder. Just recently, Dr. Scott, Expansion Therapeutics, and their partners came together and raised over $55.3 million to fund in-depth research into this disorder. These funds will go along way in making this research a success, and therefore saving numerous lives
About Dr. Scott Rocklage
Rocklage is a Chemistry Bachelor of Science Degree holder from the University of California. He later joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he attained a Chemistry Ph.D. His most significant career opportunity came in 2003 when he joined 5AM Ventures. In 2004, he was made a Managing Partner at the firm.
With over 30 years’ experience working in different capacities in the medical industry, Rocklage has seen through the FDA approval of 3 drugs. These drugs include Teslascan, Omniscan, and Cubin.
