A Birds of Prey movie is reportedly set to begin filming by the end of this year, and a director (Cathy Yen) has been hired, but apparently the only sure things about the film is the inclusion of Batgirl and Harley Quinn.
According to Variety’s Justin Kroll, there are two versions of the film’s script currently under consideration; at least one was written by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee: The Movie), but it is unknown if she wrote the other or not. Either way, the scripts are apparently quite different, except that Batgirl (presumably Barbara Gordon) and Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie in the DC Extended Universe) are in both.
In the comics, Birds of Prey are an all-female superhero team (well, Hawk was kind-of in for a while). The group has featured a wide range of semi-regular members over the years, but the core is traditionally made up of Gordon (as either Batgirl or Oracle), as well as Helena Bertinelli/Huntress and Dinah Lance/Black Canary.
The fact that these latter two are missing from at least one of these scripts is kind of surprising. Harley’s inclusion is both fitting and confusing; she is not a member in the comics, but she is one of the breakout female stars of the DCEU so far and is associated with the Batman franchise, so she fits. Given her moral ambiguity, it is unclear if she will be an antagonist or reluctant teammate of the group (or both, depending on the script).
Kroll says that the film is set to begin filming soon, so Warner Bros. has some decisions to make. Then again, the DCEU’s roster changes frequently, so let’s wait and see if this actually moves forward at all.
