Fan-Made “Shazam” Poster Includes Cyborg

A fan of the upcoming DC Extended Universe film Shazam has made an amusing poster for the film that includes fellow young hero Cyborg.

MessyPandas had already distinguished himself in another way to fellow fans of this movie: on his DeviantArt page, he made a “Big Gulp Shazam Transparent” PNG file that allowed you to insert the first official picture of the film’s star (played by Zachary Levi) into any video. The movie’s own director, David F. Sandberg, utilized it for a humorous video based on a clip from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

In the poster, he shows Levi’s character (who may wind up called “Shazam” or “Captain Marvel) sitting on a rooftop, holding a video game controller. Cyborg (played by Ray Fisher in the DCEU, though here only shown from behind) is sitting next to him, and using his robotic attachments to project their game, Street Fighter 2, on a billboard across the street from them.

Shazam focuses on Billy Batson (played by Asher Angel), a teenager who who can change into a superpowered adult (Levi) with the magic word “Shazam!” Sandberg, Levi and others have made it clear that the movie intends to milk this concept for humor; the official picture, which shows the superhero casually slurping on a soda, captures that level of silly immaturity, as does this fake poster.

Cyborg is also a teenager, albeit a few years older than Billy; in the New 52 comic continuity, the two were friends specifically because of their relatively close ages, being the two youngest members of the Justice League. Whether or not that will happen in the DCEU remains to be seen; in any event, there has been no official word about Cyborg showing up in Shazam.

These types of mobile device ads are known as “geofencing”, which is a marketing method that uses global positioning system (GPS) or radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to define a geographic border. When mobile devices cross this geographic boundary, they receive an alert or notification on their mobile device.

Bill Kakis of Tell All Digital, a digital marketing firm, has just made several deals with various Philadelphia law firms to aim mobile ads at patients. There are also many other marketing companies in other states that are trying geofencing in hospital settings. Kakis told NPR that even though everyone in the emergency room may not need an attorney, the flip side is that people who need a personal injury lawyer are likely to be in a medical emergency care location.

Kakis says that when people cross this digital fence, the mobile ads can keep displaying for longer than a month and on mobile devices. Kakis believes that these types of marketing tactics are legitimate aspects of modern marketing techniques, similar to any other type of advertisement.

However, this may not always be the case. Last year, Massachusetts’ attorney general negotiated a deal with a Massachusetts digital advertising firm that was targeting people in clinics. This deal effectively banished the marketing firm from the state by claiming that the firm violated the state’s consumer protection act.

In this constantly evolving field of digital marketing, there will always be conflict between privacy issues and marketing techniques. [Spoiler]’s Secret “Solo” Cameo Left Out of Script

According to the writers of Solo: A Star Wars Story, the surprising cameo at the end of the movie was not in the actual script. (Warning: spoilers follow!)

 

The movie has a twist in the last act when Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke) contacts none other than Darth Maul, with Ray Park and voice actor Samuel Witwer reprising their role as the character. This would come as a surprise to many moviegoers, as Maul seemingly died back in The Phantom Menace.

 

More dedicated Star Wars fans, however, would not have been as surprised; a post-TPM Maul has appeared in the canonical cartoon series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels, as well as in at least one novel. Still, the fact that he was the leader of the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate was a twist, and one which was carefully hidden from even the cast members, according to Jonathan Kasdan.

 

“It was never specifically named in the script. It just said, ‘A character too secret to ever name.’ Everyone did a great job of keeping it secret, and Ray was such a delight.”

 

Apparently, everybody did find out and showed up for when Park recorded his bit. They were told to keep it secret, however.

 

For the record, this is not the first time that Star Wars has pulled such tricks. The famous “No, I am your father” line wasn’t in the script, either; on paper, the movie’s big twist was that Obi-Wan, not Darth Vader, killed Luke’s father. Reportedly only Vader’s voice actor, James Earl Jones, was told the real line.

 

Fortunately for Lucasfilm this particular tidbit did not get leaked beforehand, and whether you like this twist or not, it was certainly a big surprise.

Tom Hanks as a Stormtrooper?

You know Hollywood is a tough town when its hardest working actor – and perhaps its nicest guy – can’t score a cameo role in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Solo director Ron Howard recently revealed that Tom Hanks asked to cameo as a Stormtrooper in the latest Star Wars incarnation. Given what an ace-in- the-hole the Star Wars dynasty is, it’s not surprising that major stars are working angles to land roles in Disney and Lucasfilms productions. Screenrant notes the Star Wars celebrity cameo trend started with Daniel “James Bond” Craig’s cameo turn as a Stormtrooper in The Force Awakens. Princes William and Harry have even jumped on the bandwagon with their cleverly disguised Stormtrooper turns in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Unfortunately, their scene was cut when it was discovered that William and Harry, 6’1” and 6’2” respectively, are too tall and towered over the heads of their counterparts. Industry insiders say Stormtroopers have to be exactly 5’11”.

 

Hanks and Howard are old friends who have collaborated on many films together: Splash, Apollo 13 and the Da Vinci Code series. Hanks even hilariously impersonates his friend in an “America’s Funniest Pets” sketch on Saturday Night Live. Perhaps Howard can put in a good word for Hanks with J.J. Abrams, set to write and direct the next major trilogy film, Star Wars 9. Although it might not do Hanks much good to clear his schedule before filming starts on the next Star Wars movie. His official biography lists him at 6-feet-tall.

“Avengers: Infinity War” May Pass $2 Billion

Avengers: Infinity War continues to advance, and with its Memorial Day weekend gross, it is getting close to reaching the rare $2 billion mark.

 

According to Box Office Mojo, the film made $17 million domestically over the holiday weekend, which is an impressive sum for a movie that has already been out for a month. It made an additional $32.5 million outside of the United States, giving it a grand total of about $1.9 billion.

 

That being said, its momentum is at least slowing, as those numbers are down from the $84.4 internationally and $29 million domestically that it made over the previous weekend―a weekend when it had to contend with its Fox rival, Deadpool 2. The Memorial Day weekend saw the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, a sort of “friendly rival” owned by Disney’s other major subsidiary, Lucasfilm. It performed well below expectations, barely passing the $100 million mark.

 

Meanwhile, Avengers: Infinity War has broken so many records that they can be hard to keep track of. It had the biggest opening weekend ever, both domestically and internationally, and was the fastest movie to ever reach $1 billion. It is also currently the fourth highest grossing movie of all time; the three movies higher than it (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Titanic and Avatar) are also the only three movies to pass $2 billion.

 

Such a massive success would obviously be great news for Marvel Studios and Disney, and would bode well for next year’s fourth Avengers film, which would presumably make even more money. Though described as a distinct movie, it will follow up from the cliffhanger of Infinity War, and fans are already excited to see what it does.

No, Virginia, It’s Not a Marshmellow Roast…Duh!

Most people find little humor in volcanic eruptions. However, the good folks at Huff Post did indeed try to inject a little levity into an otherwise rather sobering series of events. They dedicated an entire article to a rather offbeat question by a Twitter user. Reportedly, Jay Furr asked the U.S. Geological Survey whether someone could safely roast marshmallows over volcanic vents?

 

And the Huffington.com website saw fit to cover the story, LOL! If you’ve ever spent any time seriously contemplating a fun camping event on Mt. Kilauea, you’ll want to pay close attention to this topic. It will at least alert you to a few of the practical challenges you’ll face mixing lava with Java as you savor your S’mores.

 

No Question Outside The Realm of Science

 

To their credit, it appears the USGS took the Tweet in good humor. They did not flinch from presenting a practical answer. Indeed, if you’ve ever expended angst over this issue, rest assured even a very, very, very, very, very long marshmallow stick won’t allow you to create a culinary marshmallow masterpiece the next time you tour Kilauea.

 

Enlightenment

 

The raw stench from the sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid in the volcano will indeed cause more than a temporary loss of appetite. It will upset your tummy! As it happens, erupting volcanoes do not make trendy party sites.

 

So the United States Geologic Survey and Huffington Post don’t recommend volcano roasts. If you choose to visit the evacuation zone near the base of the mountain this year, kindly leave your marshmallows at home if you wish to stay safe. Of course, the fact the Tweet elicited an accurate response from the USGS testifies to the broadmindedness of federal employees these days. They do first class work!

Pokemon Go Spinoffs Confirmed for Switch

Almost since its announcement, Nintendo fans the world over have been speculating as to what Pokemon titles would be released for the Switch console. Finally, the company has an answer in the form of two new games coming out this fall.

 

GameSpot reports on Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee, a set of games for the Nintendo Switch console designed as spinoff titles to the Pokemon Go mobile game.

 

While little is known about the two so far, Nintendo has released some information to tide fans over until the launch date. The game appears to be set in the original Kanto region of the Generation I games, presumably with all 151 Pokemon to catch and battle.

 

In the style of previous entries like Pokemon Yellow and Generation II’s Gold and Silver, players will have a companion Pokemon (either Pikachu or Eevee depending on the game) that follows them around in the game world as they explore. However, the real meat of this adventure will involve its mobile predecessor’s main mechanic of catching Pokemon sans battles, with players tossing out Pokeballs until wild Pokemon are caught without hurting them.

 

Battles will show up according to the first official trailer, however, but only with other trainers. Unlike in Go, though, the battle system appears to be more reminiscent of the standard rock-paper-scissors style of the main series.

 

Finally, it appears that both versions of this game will be able to connect to the Pokemon Go app, letting players send Pokemon from mobile to console. The details of these transfers aren’t yet revealed, but game director and producer Junichi Masuda has confirmed that any shiny Pokemon from Go will keep their shiny status on console. Whether or not the games will be able to connect to other games in the series or the Pokemon Bank is not yet revealed.
